Mermaid

Mermaid

A Poem by Lee Maier-Agthoven

She sits by the sea.

The old scars of death vigils on

her bloated limbs, as she reached for her

marked face; her tattered warmer heaving over

folds in her belly, ankles acknowledging

the short stumps as legs.

The sun above that shuns away the unkind,

shines his light over the sea. He whispers

into the breeze and she guides them to her ears.

They tell her:

she is alive;

she is loved.
