Three Of Hearts

Three Of Hearts

A Poem by Lauren Burch
"

A girl reevaluates what love really is.

"

Her hand trails across the still water

The air as dead as her heart

Resigned to apathy has she

Her emotions torn apart

The water level can only rise

As she wades on toward her end

“I’ve been betrayed, destroyed beyond repair”

A suicidal blend

The rhythm of her frantic breathing

And the rattle of fallen leaves

Triggered memories of a life long gone

And a love she once believed

Once she had been so happy

Behind a mask she did not see

For once she thought, “Could it be true?

Could I finally be free?”

Her sanity held by glue and tape

Wasn’t enough to keep her sane

After he said that it was over

She could not describe the pain

She’d given her all and even her heart

To make sure that things would work

But never at all did she suspect

That he was just a jerk

The three of hearts lay on her bed

Taunting her watchful eye

Only then did she figure out

That love is just a lie

If love had been anything at all

It had been a fiery knife

But of course, who would care

If love had taken her life?

Only three steps more through the silky water

She’d be under water level

“Better death than love any day

Who cares if I meet the devil?”

The water gave a current strong

Off her feet and swept away

She died for him, and her heart kept beating

Love had come to play.

Love is what one makes of it. I wouldn't agree that it's a painful, spiteful emotion meant to hurt a person, my experience has thankfully been a wonderful one. But this poem does reawaken me to the fact that love isn't always happy. Good poem.

This scene you paint with your words in this poem, particular in the first couple stanzas, is absolutely breathtaking. o= You're very talented at description, and I love how the poem comes full circle at the end, with the return of the suicide scene. Very pretty, despite being so dark! ^_^

Oh, what an eerie tale in the end...I had hoped she would forget about him but that is often hard to do - beautiful imagery throughout. Thank you.

Wow... I love this. The image of love is what I like to see in poetry; not just the perfect image that many movies and books paint it as. This is great.

Sometimes people want to die for love. I have been there.
