Understanding

Understanding

A Poem by look.both.ways

I look at you and I see the drink.
I see your red eyes.
I see your fists coming my way.
I wonder what you gave to the drink instead of me.

I look at you and I see the pills.
I see your tears.
I see your body on the floor.
I wonder what you gave to the pills instead of yourself.

I look at you and I see them.
I see all the men you loved more than yourself.
I see them looking at me the way they should've looked at you.
I wonder what you gave them and took from me.

I look at you and I see pain.
I hear your voice tremble as you scream at me.
I see your hand shake as you swing it towards me.
I wonder what you had to give before it was taken from you.

Wow! A raw and intense expression of the deepest pain, despair, and betrayal. This poem so powerfully illustrates our natural desire to be Number 1 in our loved one's life, his/her highest priority, protector of us and all things valued to us---and the unimaginable pain that comes when that doesn't happen, when you realize the one you should trust the most cannot be trusted. And, of course, the physical abuse compounds the pain and torment. It's the ultimate of rejection of us as another human being. Well done. I look forward to reading more of your work.
