A Promise

A Promise

A Poem by Leslie

He looked at me

 so sad, upset,

 his eyes filled with regret

Tears fill my eyes

My heart in my throat

I'm choked with

 knowing, knowing

 what he's about to say

Praying, hoping that he won't

Please dear Lord don't

 let him say the words

 I so dread to hear

But yet again they come

 filled with the upmost sincerity

"Baby, I promise never again"

A promise

One more promise to

 be broken

One more truth

 to become a lie

One more chance

 to make me cry

A promise

My biggest fear

A promise

A piece of hope

 that is so carelessly given

 and so often taken away.

A promise

Even though he swears it's true

A promise

I know,

My heart knows,

Promises are often

the most honest of lies.

Nice. This poem is so very true, and the last line is especially poignant.
If only a promise was not "the most honest of lies". If only a promise was truly, a promise.
