Why.

Why.

A Poem by Lucien Maier

Why do you do it?

Do what?

Pick up that pen over and over?

I have to write…

But It never gives you what you want, you fight at it over and over. You have written and written and written, and its never paid off. No fame, No fortune.

I dont do it for that. I do it to be a voice through time. A highwayman.

Sure sure you tell yourself that. You want to be shakespeare we have all heard it. But its not completely true is it. You have other dreams don’t you? A little shop full of bikes all your own, Movies with your words all over them, Long motorcycle rides and even longer writes. So your not without material want.

Its true I have long dreamed of a live built around my family, wrenching, riding and writing. and yeah I even admit I would love to see something by me on the screen. But that is not why I write.

Well then why do you write?

Because I have too. Because all those years ago I set myself on this path.

Knowing full well this is most likely where I would wind up. Knowing that even I was successful there was a damn good chance I would never see a lick of that success. But yet I wanted this anyway, for all the pain and the heartache I could do it no other way.

But then why are you so hurt by it? It destroys you that people don’t grab onto your words. You have put it above everything and all its ever brought you is disappointment?

You know I wish it was a f*****g choice I wish I could walk away and never think about it again. But the simple truth is I know I need to do this, even if I keep falling flat on my face. Then that is exactly what is meant for me. It always has been. Sometime I think….

What do you think?

I can’t stop writing but maybe I should just stop releasing it to the world. Maybe then the pain won’t be as harsh. Accepting failure….

It will just call you back like it always does. No my friend you are just in for it. You get to open your chest and let the contents pour out on the sheet of paper. and For all your good intent and your hard work, You can’t stop writing, and you can’t stop presenting your work to the world like a pathetic child in hope of some praise.

And it will never take off and I will always be that poor author that never did anything.

So Be It.

so be it.

So be it. I can relate to this. I have published novels...and there is no money in it...no fame or glory, unless your mega-star status...and yet like you said...we don't write for the money, do we? We write because it's a compulsion. A need. It's breath for our lungs. Food for our souls. It's a drive that brings us ever back to that paper and pen, agonizing over yet another stanza. Another chapter. I liked the format you used here. Very original. Enjoyed this read.

so be it. You spoke my long kept secret thoughts. Sometimes i find myself in such a dilemma, should i treasure my writing or not..but the answer remains, i will write till the day i kiss the soil six feet down.

I do not write for fame or fortune... Only to calm the beating in my chest and the chaos in my mind. There's a freedom in writing for release... In writing only for yourself. It's there that I discovered what I'm really made of and found that I have no need for the praise of others.

Your words stir the soul of those who write, who feel such a desire to release the words from them, not for money or fame, but because you are a writer. May you continue to find inspiration like this flowing through you and finding its home on the page.

I agree with the message of this in a way. Everyone has doubt about what they're doing at one point or another, but it should only be a phase. If you're truly confident and certain about you're doing then there are no doubts. You either win or learn. There is no losing. The people who need constant praise and reassurance will crumble in the end. And the ones who push through the adversity will survive and grow stronger. Like I said, the work itself is something everyone can relate to. There could have been more added to this piece, like who the narrator is talking to and what brought the conversation up. There were a few basic grammatical errors, but nothing that distracted from the writing itself. Keep the faith, and thanks for sharing.

I agree with every word. The truth is we don't write for the fame we write because it's something we have to do.
Very well explained. Well done!

Writing become a part of us. We need the long road, laughter, family and free time to wander. Thank you my friend for sharing the excellent poetry.

A beautiful write describing writer's innermost feelings....to understand what it is to put our hearts out there to be broken again and again. We reveal our most tender moments....no matter what the outcome....pen to paper....we do it again. Nicely inked.

WELL, WELL, WELL!!
I don't know how to start this
I mean we all have had them conversations with
our friends or ourselves anyway.

Why do I write?
personally I am no close to being an author
because I just write to vent my feelings..
I just write sometimes because its the right thing to do.
you know how you can have opinions about some issues but
have nobody to listen to them?

well guess what? the good old pen and paper friends of your are always there
to listen. so that's why I write.
this was a great poem which gets the reader involved and thinking.
the flow and structure is also catching and striking.

well written and presented.
thank you for sharing
