A Hardcover Diary

A Hardcover Diary

Memories visited on a sleepless night

 A Hardcover Diary....

On a sleepless night of a sinking day

When solitude urged you to look for

Solace in the realm of bygone days.

I flipped through the  pages of

An old  hardcover frayed diary.

I relived  the unmasked stories

Buried deep down in the furrows

Trenched by the mundane memory.

On a worn out yellowish  page

Stained by the trails of a dead flower

I found you warm and cosy ,live and gay.

In a  dimly lit shant ,Adams playing in the background

A smoking hot coffee between us

As words were lost and so were we.

I realised those unsaid lines of that day

On the pages of a hardcover frayed diary.

I unearthed a girl ,bliss in her bonnet

Walking down an untrodden , remote

Golden beach collecting the decayed life

Shelled in the memoirs  of future days.

Drowned in the lust of adventure

Scared by its unfathomable depths

As the mist of a promising wave washed away

The  tattered page of the hardcover frayed diary.

As the pages  came alive piece by piece

Friends and Love, gain and loss

The first ride to school ,a taste of freedom

Dancing in the rain on an umbrella less day.

A fight with a buddy over a unreturned favour.

I stooped to collect all, arms spread

Unable to hold on the haul of past .

The pages of an old  hardcover frayed diary.    ------- Mala Mukherjee
