Through the Eyes of the Colorguard

Through the Eyes of the Colorguard

A Poem by Mandy Rose

I grip the cold metal pole nervously in my clammy hands
"Going to Finals" we were told
We step into place on
the enormous battle field called the Metrodome
Ten seconds until we start
I had traveled 914 miles for this
Invested countless hours
could NOT lose my focus now
Five seconds
The front ensemble is beginning to play
Our Drum Major salutes the crowd
Three seconds
One
I am fighting in the way only a dancer can fight
Focusing on footwork and forgetting arms
Time for the real work to begin
I pick up my flag
It starts to whirl, twirl and toss itself into the air
I know my flag so well
The flag and I are one
until I dropped it

First movement done
Solid start
One third of the way done
It only gets harder from here
Second movement is slower, bigger and better
More fluid flag work
more pleasing to the eyes
until I dropped it

Second movement done
Shaky, but steady middle
Time for the hardest piece of all
Bigger tosses
Grander motions
Faster tempo, no room for mistakes
But then, I dropped it
Still I finished strong
As did everyone

Third movement done
Fantastic finale
Awards ceremony proved my deepest thoughts to be true
we received Grand Champion
but not without the price and pain
and embarrassment of dropping.
