your greatest gift

your greatest gift

A Poem by marcie

When night time shadows come creeping in

And lay softly on my mind

Thats when my mind goes wandering,

For answers left to find.

Surrounded by your trinkets.

All sought in warmer climes

Each one holding a memory

Back in  happier times.

All those things got me thinking ,

Out of all the things ive had

Which of your gifts throughout my life

Has made me  what  i am .

Could it be the puppy

You gave me when i was three or four

That scared me to death on christmas day

As it bolted through the door

Or the shiny red bicycle

I unwrapped on my fifth birthday

No stabilisers or a backward glance

As i wobbled on my way

Or maybe its the flowers

You gave me on my wedding day

My marriage like those flowers

Have long since died away.

Its nothing  materialistic

That ive cherished through my life

You gave me the greatest thing on earth

The gift of how to read and write .

... "the gift of how to read and write" is indeed one of the greatest gifts ... i wonder what i'd do too ... if i couldn't read and write ... i think i'd go numb and blue ... and give up all things bright ... this is such a beautiful poem ... so mellifluous and enchanting ... simple and yet so profound ... a very enriching read ... (p.s. i think there is a typo in s 6 - l 4 ... have needs to be replaced with has) ...

I'm so glad that you learned to read and write so well Marcie. You use this gift so well to bring pleasure to us all. I can see you 'wobbling on your way' and later in life thinking of all the tokens of love that made you what you are. Thank you for sharing

Oh Marcie what a lovely rolling stroll down Memory Lane! This a poem with sentments we all shore and reflections we all treasure. It is just proof to me that rhyming poetry (now considered old fashioned) is the best and most powerful mover of thought. The words double intensity because of the rhyme which is so easy on the ear. Simple words; powerful delivery. I love, love, love it!

Oh love, that's beautiful .. it's like a song of happiness and contented happiness at that. What sweet memories .. and that final line is a 'cracker' of a finish!

Particularly like 'S*ourrounded by your trinkets. All sought in warmer climes Each one holding a memory Back in happier times.' - has very fine meter but is a smooth ride to the last full stop. * think you added an 'o' you don't need.

High rating for this, Marcie - one of your best; thanks for sharing it.
