Poem for a Lucky Dog

Poem for a Lucky Dog

A Poem by Mark Holmgren

I'm just sitting minding my own
when this blond dressed in five and dime
flashes her flash cube eyes and says wanna dance
and I say why not
We do it to the Miracles
and then to the Supremes
and then to the Temptations
but then this Coniff crap comes on
no beat   no heat   no nothing
so I ask her wanna drink and she says sure
and we go to the bar and drink sunrises
till our skin burns red and our tongues hang out
Her eyes shutter and she's rubbing her lips together
I got something on my mind she whispers
I'm thinking I'm a lucky dog
I'm all ears I tell her
but then she starts crying about what's got into her
and how since Harry left town life's depressing
and maybe I think she's a s**t or something
I brush her hair back and touch her cheek like in the movies
and look heroic as she runs off to the john
The bar's gone quiet so I mosey over to the box
and play Hank Williams tucking my thumbs in my pockets
and when she comes back she's smiling like a china doll
She kisses my cheek and whispers she's sorry
and gives me one of those looks that drives men to poetry
finally running out the door and into the street
where a Mack truck just misses her and she lives
I'm hoping happily ever after.

I love this whole poem - been there seen that myself - but it was this line just knocked it out of the ballpark for me

"and gives me one of those looks that drives men to poetry"

That is just gorgeous and something I think most women would hope to aspire to.
