Two Types of Heart Trauma

Two Types of Heart Trauma

A Poem by Matthew Clough

[I: Break]

To smash, split, or divide

into parts violently;

a suddenly echoed crackle

in the chest cavity that

fades as the splintered shards

disintegrate into wasted space;

the painful yet temporary

slice of sorrow that pierces

at the neighboring lungs

with the frenzied speed of

two snapping fingers,

impatient and forgotten

after that initial instant

as the damage begins repair.

[II: Melt]

To become liquefied by

warmth or heat;

the slow and deliberate

dissolution of a frosted vessel

brought on by recurring waves

of fond memory or image;

a persistent hum of passionate

experience that reduces icy

mass to an empty pool of

thick red stagnation in the

pit of a hollow chamber,

not to become whole again

without the frozen surge of

a frigid winter air below zero.

This poem is both very insightful and an experience. A learning experience. You introduced us to types of trauma of the heart that we previously may not have known about so we thank you. Very beautiful piece. :)
