The Chasm

The Chasm

A Poem by mehumm

You walk a dangerous line
Skirting the gray area
Between light and dark
And there are days you terrify me
Not because of who you are
But because I see this chasm in you
The gaping maw descending down,
Down into the abyss
The sheer force of your colossal being within giving rise
To this antigravity that seems to want to pull everything inside
And I’m afraid
Because I’m too close
And it’s too easy to get lost in the rolling dark
And I’m afraid because when I’ll finally resurface I won’t ever be the same
And that one day that abyss will contain all those things
You surrounded yourself with to forget who you truly are
And I won’t recognize who you are anymore
And I’ll weep for the person you could have been
And this scares me more than anything

Maybe someday I won’t remember who you could have been
