Another Winter

Another Winter

A Poem by Gerald Parker

Yet again it catches us unawares
like bad news we share with next-door.

And yet again we couldn't get away
like swallows to some summer retreat.

We see young mothers pushing buggies
against the wind, already bent like us.

We envy children in their icy playground,
playing games with plumes of breath.

We wince with age as we turn down the heat,
poorer each year and stiff with cold.

We make tea and sit through another day,

nursing a sadness that needs the sun.

We peer through rain-spattered windows

and scowl at leaden skies and skeletal trees.

Next-door dodges puddles with his coated dog,
greets our parted curtains like a bearer of hope.

A beautiful poem concerning modern society. How I wish I was a child again, playing in the snow and ice, seeing how much I enjoyed it. Bundling up as we get older against the cold temperatures, even at home. Seeing parents struggle with life outside, even if we don't know them, we can see it on their faces. I feel we all long for the sun to heal us...to make everything seem alright again, even if the world is falling apart. Great story here, I enjoyed it!

There's not much to tell. I read a lot of poetry and I read my own poetry regularly. I hope other people read it and derive as much pleasure out of it as I do. My output is small, about 110 poems as I.. more..
