Heavy Quotes and Button Strings:The Words I Learned in College

Heavy Quotes and Button Strings:The Words I Learned in College

A Poem by Arly Parent
"

It's been a rough semester. These are quotes of things I've heard throughout the past...5-6 months (with maybe a few outliers) from just...too many people. Also, I haven't chosen a title.Have an idea?

"
I...have never been so beaten down,
so patently aware
of the follies and foibles of the world in which we live,
of the people who inhabit it.

There is
still racism in the world.
There is
bitter judgement and
harsh surprise when
you realize...
someone still thinks you're a n****r.

There is
hidden meaning,
simple words not meant to be but stemming
from prejudice.
"Been there, done that"
because your race is all the same.
And one need not mention
the possibility of That
happening again.
Because implicitly,
he and you are you and he and one color, one same person,one...
and it doesn't matter if you're not...
because I've "Been there, [and] done that."

There is
a kind of pain,
a stark recalculation when
someone
like you
but who
is unused to it all
rails at an injustice
that escaped your notice,
that you did not see for what it was
...because of repetition and an easy sense...
of "normalcy."

There is
complacency
and a shortage of foresight
and addiction
to an affliction of every kind.
And no move to leave or change or grow or...
"I hate that..."
"He keeps..."
"It's just what I'm used to."
or
"I'm just a [derogatory comment]."
"I keep doing...[detrimental action]."
"I have done bad in the past."

There is
a prevalence in taking good for granted
and no fear of consequences...
"You're always there for me."
"I don't want to be responsible for your feelings"
"I need you."
"Maybe I haven't been...but..."
"I really wanna tell you about my great date"
"I know...but...My date was..."
"You're a jerk"
...or loss.

Something...
is wrong.

This was really interesting format-wise, with all the brackets and quotes and such. I can really read the struggle and confusion here. Honestly, I think this would be great as performance poetry because of all the voices... Mmmm. Good write!

There's nothing about me. I play with pauses as well as silence. I write words, assign meanings and junk, and play with a language that might be as much my own as another. I don't know. more..
