The Last Dragon

The Last Dragon

A Poem by C. Harter Amos
"

For all the animals thoughtlessly slaughtered into extinction

"

The great Chimère raised his regal head

And mourned the last of his children who lay dead

At his clawed feet, their beauty and perfection a thing to grieve

If only for a moment before it was time

To raise his massive wings to leave

This place he’d shared with his lifelong mate

Whose body was gone, her slaughter their kind’s fate.

Wherever the Beautiful One lay with her broken crimson scales

Chimère’s own heart couldn’t help but stay

For all of time without end.

The Drako would give his heart to only one

Until the far distant death of the galaxy’s sun.

The blue of his scales matched the sky

Giving no reason to look up, no reason to ask why

The massive eloquent beast should fly overhead unheard,

Not a beat of wing, not a whispered word,

Only the drop of tears that fell from blue skies,

From his beautiful lavender-blue catlike eyes.

He’d had friends who were human

In towns nearer Loch Lomond

But he was a prince of his kind

The nine black ridges along his spine left no doubt

To any who knew this obvious sign of royalty.

He could never live in fear

And the bottomless Loch Ness was near,

Its darkness suited him well.

The lake’s surface was as smooth as glass

It shimmered for a moment as Chimère Drako’s mass

Broke the surface and he swam below

In elegant movements, swanlike and slow

Like a dance to the depths, his gills suddenly filled.

He would stay there forever; no more dragon blood would be spilled.

His royal blue scales have long ago turned black

The ridges now soft along his once strong back

Mankind now thinks of Chimère Drako on rare occasions

When tourists take shadowed pictures during their vacations

At Loch Ness to catch a glimpse of the lizard illusion

We call a monster of mad delusion.

I like the history that you have painted of Nellie...the illusive "monster" of Loch Ness...I found myself drawn in, and I admit, I am not that into fantasy, but this is well woven. It seemed more fairy tale than anything, and I can see your beautiful dragon.
Thank you for letting me escape the duldrums with this piece.

Very nice. I like how you mention the detailing of the dragon, his eyes and spine. Gotta love dragons...I also wrote a story about a Dragon from Draco-the constellation. Is that where you got the idea??

Some of the most beautiful ideas I've read come from your poems ,and this should be read by animals and nature loves. Our animals know more than we do. If we listen to them, we would really be much better off. rich language and meaningful message. I have read this in one breath. Then again. incredibly endangered world that we live in, many should read this poem and get back to what really matters for humankind. Great poem.

very beautiful! I love your story and the way it flows into the end part. It is a very smooth transistion from telling a story to explaining a why. Well done!

Bravissimo. A splendid (but sad) tale and I love how you incorporated the legend of Nessie into this. Well done.

This writing speaks on many levels and really is giving me a bit of chills .. for drago's dragon crown
were his nine black spines stripped along his back.. and in fate he gave himself for the cause..
to be the last dragon .. living on in royal legacy as to remember what has happened to those animals
aimlessly slaughtered.. killed for human need.. but he was a warrior.. a prince of his kind

sharing grace along with blue skies.. this is very heart touching because your words bring
into light what it means to preserve the beauty of nature.. and its importance to our planet
.. absolutely haunting images of the soul of nature fading under water.. slowly drifting below
the surface.. suffocating.. dying.. and those in future will see the obvious but remain blind.. i loved this poem.

The 'mythology' of dragons suggests a much earlier kind of 'ufology` - maybe dragons were the UFO's of the times? And this is interesting in the way you portray a continuation of that 'mythology' - bringing it right up to present day. A truly modern mythological tale with a beating heart very nicely portrayed.
Leaves me wondering about other and more modern `monsters of mad delusion`.
thank you for this!

When I was a kid, I've always believed that the dragons were the "Last Dinosaurs" all the way until I saw this movie "Reign Of Fire" Always wondering whatever happened to them and why nobody ever found any of the flossils (bones) of the dragons...

Anyway, this is really great fantasy piece you got there and somehow, it reminded me of the old movie "Dragon Heart" So, it's all still good tho...
