Ariel, or, Don't Be Ludicrous It's My UterusA Poem by Molly Cara
Ariel thought of Rick Perry when she was at the
Doctor's and the doctor made her listen to the
Heartbeat of the fetus. She wanted to encircle
His wrist in her hand and listen for the pulse
That would never sound she would hear the ocean
In his chest cavity where there was nothing
But trapped air Rick Perry was just another
Seashell on the white sandy beach
In these charades we call "elections"
As if there's really much of a choice as if
The lesser of two evils plans to
Represent the people.
And the doctor almost resembled the father
The one who got her name wrong
(He'd called her "Muriel" that night
And licked her lipstick off and her bones
Dry and that tends to be the end of the story
For the guy).
Ariel hated secrets especially her own but this one
She'd have to keep now Ariel falls asleep
Sorting through prayers she'll never pray and cheeks
She'll never stain with her lipstick.
