Dear Father-

Dear Father-

A Poem by walt whitman
"

A life that ended before I knew it

"

I have never walked passed you

But you are that brown, haggard leaf in the middle of summer

Clinging to the branch like a flickering street lamp trying to hold its light

I did not watch your fall-

Although I knew it was imminent

I stepped on you, heard you crumple and crack

(I buried you under the heel of my shoe)

I winced from the sound

But I keep walking
