Surprise

Surprise

A Poem by Molly

Surprise is the predecessor to affection and

Love..

...so frequently used
Yet rarely captured.
It seems to be more
A social statement
Of the worst kind.

"Know you are loved everyday"
"Without love there is nothing"

But isn't it better to find love
As if you were flipping through vinyl
At your favorite record store
And there you find a hidden treasure?

Through attraction,
You grasp that within that one moment
Of appreciation, awe, and luck

And surprise

Love has been found.

A level-headed dislike of platitudes here. You seek to rescue the meaning of love as an immediate and overwhelming connection based on attraction, rather than the idea of a steady and loyal kinship that gets you through the day. This poem asks us, I think, to put the romance back into love and not turn it into a careworn teddy bear to snuggle up to at night.

The metaphor of the vinyl store is very apt, perhaps because of its connotations of being out-of-date but still fashionable to some. This strikes against your "social statement"s very well.

LOVE IT! Hahaha some pun intended. I saw myself flipping through old records and finding a treasure! I have never owned a record player, but I always have wanted one, and even as a kid I searched high and low, but they were all so expensive or the needles were broken. I know this poem isnt only about that, but it made me want to say it. Love is so complex and here you capture one of its smaller more common, yet nonetheless enjoyable, aspects, surprise! Its been a long time since I have experienced it, and partially may be my own fault for having such high standards in my mind for everything, but because of this poem I pray I can have some good surprise again soon :D
