Heart First, Head Second

Heart First, Head Second

A Poem by Chuck

Hold my hand a little tighter
Nothing is better than being lost together
This is Our time to be young

                               Young and stupid

This will make us or break us

Absolutely Ready
Completely unprepared
Planning my escape, and for the first time willing
Willing to be blind with no one leading the way

I will faithfully follow Your life lines

Plans for the future will never make sense
Just encourage the spontaneous gesture
And stop thinking long enough to listen
Listen to me lose all rationality in favor of You

                                               For all five heartbeats

You can keep pretending to guess my choice
But it is beginning to waste Our time here
There is only one answer
Answer me Yes, because all You need to do is ask

There is beauty even in the dust leftover

My hopes are tossing themselves
High beyond my reach or provocation
For once, do not use logic, and do not look ahead
Ahead of us is Our beginning

For all We know, someday is anyday of the week

And I am running full force to make it last
                        Heart first,
                        Head second.

I think this talks about life: its stages and its journey. The decision and choices we make at the prime of our youth are solely based on what matters at the moment. Happiness is too shallow and wishes are too simple. Consequently, it cannot be avoided that we get lost and waste some years in life. The realization, however, comes in and that, those encounters we had are actually part of the learning process. So, it's like emotions are sacrificed to get a better conviction of things.

This is really great. I love the setup and the movement of each line - it's like you're passing off a baton of meaning. I also really like the way you can extract the italicized lines to make a poem all of its own - they work so well together, but they can function on their own, too. Powerful stuff. Great job!
