Demon of DarknessA Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader
Demon of Darkness
Twas a demon in the night when darkness falls On Bolt Mountain, I heard its call It echoed on the mountain and the valley below Chaos exploded as a stag and his doe Ran from the whispers with fear in their eyes The deer heard it too; I'm not telling lies A demon spoke my name in whispered tones I listened closely and heard its moans Low whispers scratching in my ear In the fog there's much to fear Dead logs moved on the path Whispers grew louder, I felt its wrath Deeper and deeper I ventured in Following those low whispers of sin Hot breath blew across my hair I turned around, but no one was there A sinister laugh caught me off guard I tripped on a branch and hit the ground hard There it is again, on my neck its hot breath Its whispers I understand; it speaks of death Invisible hands cut off my air My eyes bulging, still no one is there The stench of its breath, in my nostrils burn I was gripped with fear, a real concern Out of the darkness I saw a light In the distance, it was oh so bright Suddenly the demon loosed its grip I pulled away, but my foot did slip A still small voice called my name I had heard it before and it was the same My demon fled at the sound it the voice I turned to see my Savior and I did rejoice Nevermore will I give the demon its due I'll stick close to the voice that is now calling to you
