Copper Kettles and Conversation
A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader
Copper Kettles and Conversation
In the kitchen of my childhood days
Where warmth reigned supreme
Copper kettles and conversation
Mixed with love and admiration
We gathered round the table
Mom and us three girls
We peeled apples
And bushels of peaches
Strung a million beans
Scalded the skins off ripe tomatoes
And filled every canning jar
We worked together in teams
Mom would listen, as we told
Of childhood dreams
Years has passed and Mom is gone
To her kitchen up above
Us three girls are grown
And have families of our own
Sad to say the canning process
Lost out to store bought goods
No more peeling apples
Or peaches by the bushel
Beans come already stung
Ripe tomatoes scalded in large vats
Mom’s canning jars now hold flowers
And country sweet tea
Copper kettles sit idle on the shelf … but
Dreams still are heard by this mom, me
One day we’ll all be together
In Mom’s kitchen in the sky
Again under Mom’s watchful eye
We’ll sit around her table
Copper kettles won’t be on the shelf
Mom and her three girls
Again we’ll peel those apples
And bushels of peaches from God’s trees
And string a million beans from His garden
And tomatoes from His vine
Mom’s canning jars will be full again
As the conversation flows
We three girls are kids once more
Our dreams fulfilled and all in heaven knows

great spin on the prompt: full of love, nostalgia and divinity. touching thoughts and recollections make me feel as though the mother spoken of was whispering the old recipes in her daughters' ears whilst she was using the modern products.
