The Old Woman

The Old Woman

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

The Old Woman

I walked through the opened door that morning so long ago.
The old woman there cried many tears, bankrupt she had to go.
Her home was being auctioned off, and her future was unsure.
I watched and saw her ageless beauty fade at what she must endure.
She fainted when his Navy Cross was penned to a muddy faced boy.
The poetics of her memories washed away as his award for valor became a toy.
Her advancing age took its toll on this woman left all alone.
I followed her that day and watch her walk away, lost and forlorn.
Her small form cast a larger shadow on buildings along the way.
She’d either go to a homeless shelter or God’s home; I heard them say.

so very sad.
I believe that "penned" should be pinned.
I don't think I couldve let that cross go, no matter what.
sad what people have to endure in this lifetime.

God Bless their souls
