Haiku Under the Lonely Tree

Haiku Under the Lonely Tree

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

Haiku Under the Lonely Tree

Life has many turns

Twisting from joy to sadness

In a moment’s time

In my twilight years

I’m under the lonely tree

Reliving the past

Taken from my life

My husband of forty years

It should have been me

My health always bad

He was the picture of health

Until cancer struck

I’m lost and alone

Wishing I could turn back time

Know what I know now

No not possible

Tree of loneliness, despair

Left me grief stricken

One picture of him

Drives the loneliness away

For a brief moment

Memories relived

In the joy of that moment

His spirit is close

Cherish your loved ones

They shed leaves without notice

Trees of loneliness

Quiet solitude

Moments of joy now gone

Loneliness consumes
