Haiku Duck on the Water

Haiku Duck on the Water

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

Haiku Duck on the Water

Duck feels loneliness

Mallards flew away last fall

Leaving him behind

With broken wing the

Frozen winter was too long

He waits their return

Duck on the water

He sees his reflection there

Could this be a friend?

Figures out it's him

Duck's tears splash in the water

Soon will die of grief

Wait, up in the sky

Duck spies the flock; they've come home

Duck's life is restored

Duck on the water

Rejuvenation is found

This duck can still swim

Woodsman used a stick

And strips from his only shirt

Duck still felt the pain

Bandage now hanging

Good woodsman’s stick kept wing straight

Come fall, fly away

Hey, I like this one. The analogy actually made me laugh, the way I felt that human suffering was projected onto a duck was funny to me. For that, I really like this one. "Soon will die of grief", I found it hilarious that a duck might think that. I hope I haven't misunderstood the meaning of your poetry. But in any case, it was enjoyable for me. Thank you for sharing.

So sad, but nice teal tale! I don't think ducks are really lonely, though! Every time I see them they are seemingly happy in groups.
