Haiku My Doberman PupA Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader
Haiku Chloe, My Doberman Pup Chloe my sweet pup Fits in the palm of my hand But won’t fit there long She grows like a week Getting bigger every day Four pound, ten pound more First a playful pup Chloe finds protective mode Listens to commands Friendly to a fault She thinks she’s just a lap dog At eighty-nine pounds Should named her velcro She’s a leaner; yes she is Lays head on my life She’s so protective Of two smallest grandchildren No one dares come near She’s playing dress up With necklaces and earrings Wearing Lyndsey’s dress When she’s dressed like that She doesn’t look so fierce Unless you come near her girl Loves to play Frisbee Michael laughs as she jumps high Catches ever time Sleeps in grandma’s bed Just like a puppy so small Snuggles in the night They do have bad rep By people who don’t know them Really big babies Dobermans are smart Chloe shakes and does high five And other tricks too Sits and stay when told Balances treats on her nose Until I say eat She watches TV Loves her Animal Planet Barks at cats and dear Plays with Anubis He was there when she was small Now he’s small; she’s big Two peas in a pod Cat and dog sleep together Laying nose to nose Chloe loves to play With many squeaky toys Sleeps with a stuffed dog Should you fear these dogs? No not if they’re raised to play And taught their commands Still, I must warn you Don’t come calling in the night Chloe is on guard © 2009 Nancy Lee Shrader |
