Aarvark in the Morning

Aarvark in the Morning

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

Aardvark in the Morning

I’m the aardvark in the morning

Searching for my food

I spend my day searching

To feed my little brood

I first scoop up the ants

Inside my long snout

Then hurry for dessert

Not a single ant gets out

No pottery in hand

I walk on sensitive feet

Searching for red berries

A tasty treat that is so sweet

Where did all the strawberries go?

I wonder as I search the forest green

My hunger drives me forward

Forgetting my fear of bears so mean

I must find those red berries

Before the heat of the day

The bear is close behind me

I don’t want to be his prey

I should have known better

I stayed out here too long

I hear the bear a growling

He sings his victory song

With ants and berries in my snout

I run as fast as I can go

I won’t drop those berries

Even though they make me slow

I’ll hide in the bushes

Until he goes away

Oh no I have to sneeze

Oh what a horrible day

Wow! That is absolutely hilarious. So well written, the rhyme and rhythm are wonderful even though the flow and structure could use a little work. Otherwise the imagery is great, very vivid, and the mature childish tone throughout the entire poem was perfect. The ending was very humorous. Well done!
