Finally 18

Finally 18

A Poem by Nia Hope
"

Happy birthday to me :)

"
Technically it is legal
Since now I am 18
To go run off and be a w***e
And in the bed be queen

If I so chose to have a smoke
I wouldn't get in trouble
Hookah vape cigarette or cigar
Don't try to burst my bubble

Won't have to listen to my folks
Don't have to hear them whine
I can make my own rules now
I'll color outside the line

But I'm not like that, that's not who I am

I wouldn't choose to sleep around
I wouldn't choose to smoke
I wouldn't choose to diss my fam
I'm not making a joke

I'll always be that short a*s nerd
You see with marching band
I'll always be that strong little girl
With privates lacking sand

Independent I've always been
I'm 18 now (whoopie)
I can stay out past city curfew
But that will not change me.

Nice rhyming on the second half of the poem. The last stanza kind of tells me that you didn't feel free, which is understandable when it came to turning 18 in the past.

Well happy birthday Ankara. You can join the armed forces just like I did when I turned 18.

This is so strong and defiant, and a little saucy -- judgemental of your peers perhaps, because they have been judgemental of you?

Wow, this is such an accurate description of what I thought about turning 18 ( in which I always thought I was alone)! Just have to get past 21 now...
