Night Windows

Night Windows

A Poem by Nigel Newman
"

Another lyric from my band's musical history. Prompted to upload it after the recent UK heatwave.

"

Night Windows

She closes her eyes in the green garden chair

Forehead aglow in the still suncream air

Nothing stirs in the glade

All the birds are in shade

Silently waiting for twilight

Twilight

Beside her a water-jug; empty and warm

While in the next garden they’re mowing the lawn

Toiling over the grass

Somewhere a car goes past

Trying to keep out of sunlight

Sunlight

Later she’ll read by the sun’s final ray

While a bat in the last light flies silent ballet

Tonight she will shower and leave off the sheet

Night windows open and air on her feet

All too soon, sunrise

She’ll open her eyes

Quietly waiting for daylight

Daylight

I love the title and the poem itself is light and smooth and somehow also slightly sensual in its tone. Seems to be of a peaceful and warm nature. I enjoyed the way in which you portrayed the woman very vaguely, perhaps allowing the reader to use their own imagination in regards to her.

Nice job, I could see this as the lyrics to a good song. :)

Morning Nigel.
Soon summer will cede to Autumn, nights will draw in and the above poem will be the memory to see us through to spring.
A fine wee piece.
We too love to watch the bats at dusk

"Flies silent ballet" killer line

Poems structure is very rigid, which normally I would say, "loosen up man!" But it really works here.

Good poem

I love the transition, from waiting for twilight to daylight. The words used are vividly descriptive. Most people who write poems like this usually end up with something boring. But this one, however, is very beautifully written. I love it! :)

I really am curious about the tune and how the piece would sound when sung. I'll listen to it when I have the time. :)

I suppose the repetition of the last word of each stanza works in a song. It works for lyrics, but not so much in a poem. However, you set the scene well and the imagery is good. Lydi**

There is a certain beauty to night-time, oft eulogized about, serenaded to by poets across generations and yet yours has a lingering ode to nightime while using the lady in the poem as the focal point. Is she the main character, a tacit personification of the night itself or a prism through which we look at the different spatial aspects is out there for the reader to interpret. Smooth and easy-flowing, this is clearly an enjoyable read Nigel. I may be way off with my interpretation from what you may have intended it to be, but here were my humble two-cents.

Best,
M.

This is musical and mesmerising. The phrases used here are incredible like
"suncream air","While a bat in the last light flies silent ballet" etc.
I think this poem portrays a night and beautiful dreams.
I like the flow and rhythm too, which is flawless!
Breathtaking!
