The Local Pub... Was a National Institution. RIP.. never to be forgotten.

A Poem by Dawn

The local pubs
are closing down
and start to
become obsolete
one by one.
Until eventually
gone for good.
How very sad.

If you go,
into any City Centre
or Country Village.

It's starting
to be a rarity
if any are left open
and actually making
a profit to survive.

I remember
in the olden days.
The local pubs
where the heart of
the community.

You really got
some right characters
in them.

The "piss-pots"
as they where known
always drunk and going
to the toilet.
So-called them piss-pots.

And the local "jack the lads"
who went in most nights to
chat up the women
they fancied
for a quick bit
of sex
around the
back of the pub.
Later on,
when it closed.

And also the old folk.
Who went in for a gab.
Conversation and to talk.
With a pint of beer and
chaser whiskey to warm
their inners up afterwards.

Reading the national and
local newspapers and
placing an
odd horse or dog bet
on in the bookies, next door.

And if they won a race
they would place another
bet and buy themselves
and their mate another
chaser of whiskey.
And have a natter.
(a chat).

And the young girls after
finishing work.
All dressed up.
Giggling and having a laugh
with their mates.
Going to the local pub
to find that nice guy
to find and marry and
have kids with long term
down the road.

As you see the pub was
the meeting place.

For jobs, information,
entertainment and making
friends and getting help.
Just like in Eastenders
on television now.

You may laugh.
But it's true.
And now this part of history
is dying faster than time itself.

I took to write
this prose poem
about them.

They were a National Institution.
The Local Pub. RIP.

Once more you take a social issue and give us a pen picture of it, reminding us of the importance the pub played in lour communities. Thankfully many still remain but perhaps the eating side now rules and the prices are usurped by supermarkets who sell beer etc cheap. Life changes, society changes and we are swept along.

You are so right Dawn. Five minutes away we have our local and we support it through thick and thin. If it closes the developers will move in and build homes. We want a pub. Prices aren't cheap but there is a great community atmosphere and it's been open the whole 37 years I've lived in my home. Thanks for raising the issue about the good old British pub.

The art of the drinker is a dying art , a place to tell stories, feel safe, have a laugh with the brain damage crew, but the ghost of the pub is a dying breed, where will our grand children go, to go, and to get drunk and breed

Chains, Chains, Chains...like that song said "my baby's got me locked up in chains"--
our society has come to that now..Chain Restaurants, bars, grocery stores...the mom and pop stores and bars cannot afford to exist anymore...
monopolies are killing the variety...it's so sad.
i think i'll have a drink to the old days!

You hit it right on the nose Jacob, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Dawn.
Same here in the USA. Few Pubs are left. Hard to keep a good tavern open. Need food now to survive. I miss the days of drink, conversation and a place to think. I was the tavern poet for 36 years. Thank you Dawn for sharing your amazing poetry and your thoughts.
