JARL TORC

JARL TORC

A Poem by Orlando Furioso
"

Inspired by Robert Low's THE WHALE ROAD, a story of mid-10th century viking quest.

"

O hear my wind-played ropes a-thrum

Skald axes flying through the sky

To live anew in this word crew

My fetch a-kenning on your mind

My sea you are my whale road free

I swear you are my destiny

In you I am alive anew

O how life's flow through you I row

Alive! alive! alive in you!

I am the jarl of you that's gone

These raven wings on which you fly

Straight through our father's kenning eye

You bear this weight of slivered breath

In you my fetch defies dry death

My inner viking awakens - you make me want to go back and read Beowulf and Gilgamesh, and the Song of the Nibelungs, the Eddas, not all viking related..but that desire for the elder days swells. I long to hunt whales, swing my sword, and pay attention to the conversation in the wine halls.

I'm with the comment below, I'm lost.

I love the history and feel of this for the magical feel of the time and history but it feels like more.. it has passion with want and need with the way life flows through and flying on raven's wings.. this allows the reader to get lost...and I so like getting lost..xo

Ghostly images of the Vikings quest, the blood and sweat, and mist I imagine, for some reason, not sure why? Its like a whole new language. Remarkable imagery as if you were there.

A hint of the shanty here, but also of the ballad and perhaps a wee bit of the valedictory as well. In any case, it's fine stuff.

Well, now I know a lot I didn't know. And I'm always glad to learn these things; it's part of what I like best about W/C. It's a fine poem from what I understand of it.
