Where the Children Lie

Where the Children Lie

A Poem by Pamela Gold
"

A woman finds solace within the cemetery.

"

when the sky is somber

and leaves disguise the ground

she wanders through the withered grass

rocks perched upon markers

a tally of visitations

contemplating the dates

some at rest for decades

fresh earth blankets others

velvet green chairs abandoned

human remains departed

extinct

it is calming

her sanctuary

her sedative

she sweeps the grounds

avoiding one space

where laughter no longer exists

old toys left in its place

once stumbled upon by mishap

she sobbed

and she mourned

the only instance of feeling detached

in a place filled with whispers
