things aren't always as they seem

"
i feel a familiar sensation i haven't felt in a while. my right hand, twisting, turning, moving, doing what i tell it to do. such a nice feeling. i sit back, sighing. the pain then causes me to sit right back up.
my hand has begun to contort itself too far. i can't get it to go back, it just keeps distorting itself. i wince, the pain growing stronger and stronger. i notice now that the arm is not only in painful postition, it's also several inches too short. i try to get it to stop, but i can't, i really can't, it won't do anything i tell it to do now-
i glance over to it. it's just an empty sleeve, as always. the pain subsides, and i gasp for air. i sink back into my chair, sweating, shaking, like a small child. i try to move my arm again. my stump rises into the air, but the rest of the sleeve just dangles.
