Another Love Poem

Another Love Poem

A Poem by N.Sevilla
"

Another heartbreak love poem.

"
Oh how you hurt me so but taught me how to love.
Got me sick of my own heartbroken words.
Got me weak from withdrawal from the love you took.
Quit cold turkey, gone in the air,
Like a puff of smoke from your lingering cigarette ash.
I can smell it now, the scent on my bed,
From the nights you left me realizing
What I missed in my early youth.
Teaching me what those love songs were really about
And agreeing our own song had a prettier sound.
This bittersweet love which leaves me split
Between hating you like a thief that stole away
All that I became
And thanking you for teaching me the things
No one can learn alone,
About the word I used to scoff at
That now only makes me sigh.
Oh, yes, I would cry, if I let myself be
The thousand girls who I hate for being weak,
Showing they are just like me.
Drinking wine on our couch shoving each other and laughing.
The wine threatening to tip over and spill
And stain deep within and sink within.
It never did 'til the night you left
When the glass fell from my hand and shattered right before
My very eyes,
The jagged edges stained with red.
From the ground bloomed a scarlet rose
That licked my feet with cunning fire,
Staining everything in its path.
And I admit I was glad you weren't there
To see the couch you so longed to protect
Turning red from the wine you loved to drink.
That was then and this is now.
Thank you, but I hate you.
I heard you drink beer and switched to weed.
It seems wine and cigarettes weren't enough
To wipe away the past and start again.
But I heard you still keep that thrift store scarf.
The one you said had a million stories to tell
And you wanted to add a million more.
How I hope you will hold on to it a little longer
To add that million more.

Author's Note

N.Sevilla
I really dislike these types of poems, yet from time to time I find myself writing them. It was originally supposed to be someone looking back at their first love now that they have grown older, but it didn't quite turn out that way. Poems are tricky things in that sense.

Seems they DO have a mind of their own don't they? - refering to your author's note.

I agree it's not just another love poem... it's a lovely poem of becoming and letting go...and the art of having to live tween lines... well spoken.
