The Wolves That Were

The Wolves That Were

A Poem by Scott H.
"

I saw the wolves of Yellowstone's Lamar Valley. Magnificent, and a real privilege.

"

“The Wolves That Were”

The wolves that were
Depicted in Old European folk tales
Got a bad rap from
Killing pigs and eating grandmas,
Engendering an attitude
Of fear and apprehension
That carried itself across the Sea
Into the New World where
The wolves that were
The dominant predators and
Maintained the natural balance
Of the Western wildlands
Became themselves the prey,
Hunted past the brink of decimation
Until attitudes becan to change and
The wolves that were
Now absent became reintroduced.
I saw them at the Lamar valley,
Black specks on the horizon
Like whisps of night scattering
Before the breaking of dawn,
Myself delighted that
The wolves that were have
Become the wolves that are.
