I think you could do away with the entire first stanza. Because the flow and imagery of the poem really kicks in from the second stanza on. Also everything you state in the first stanza is already said in your choice of metaphor and imagery of the subsequent stanzas. I love the imagery and the feeling of this. Thanks for sharing.

Such a strong nationalistic fervour is rare these days. For some reason in the cynical west it's frowned upon. Political correctness gone mad. I well remember when our schoolchildren saluted the flag every morning, and were taught to feel proud of their country... all gone now, with multiculturalism. We don't know what we've lost. Well done.
