A Love to Last Forever

There was a time,

A time when my world centered around your smile.

There was a place,

A place where we both were happy.

There is a life,

A life that we have built together, you and I.

There is a family,

A family which you have nurtured with all your heart.

There was a love,

A love meant to last from now until forever.

 

But forever is a long, long time.

The time that was there has somehow passed.

The place where we were happy is now lost to us.

The life that we built together has grown apart.

The family nurtured by your heart still survives, strong and loving,

And so I endure, for the love of it.

 

Where have we gone?

How did we get here?

How can it be,

That a love to last forever,

Has frozen on the vine?

 

I weep not.

I ache not.

I seek not.

I love not.

 

Not true.

 

I weep for what has been lost to time.

I ache for the place to be happy with you.

I seek the life which we built together.

I love the thought of loving you.

But the truth of the world is clear and bright,

I love the thought of loving you, but forever has come and gone,

And the love to last forever, itself has crept into the night.

This is so sad. Forever is a long, long time and it seems we have lost our fighting power. We don’t fight when we can and then it gets to a point where fighting is no longer helpful. Where there’s nothing left to fight for and all we can do is hide in the memories and take in all the comfort they bring. A saw in a previous comment you said the only hope is love anew. I couldn’t agree with you more, why try to put the pieces back together…it will never be as beautiful as it once was. Rather build something equally as beautiful and learn from the broken pieces. Wonderful poem!
