Guilty Is

Guilty Is

A Poem by Madeleine Celeste

Guilty is the thought that startles you awake
And the thought that keeps you up until you cry yourself to sleep again
Guilty is a stare into the mirror
And you try not to look yourself in the eyes
For you fear that guilt is showing
Guilt is knowing that you have done it
It being however scandalous or hurtful as you feel
But you have done it
And now there is no taking back
What you have done.
Guilty is a question
"Why?"
Saying that you're seeking self-reflection
And answers you know very well
you
do
not
want
to
find.

Wow...I LOVE this. You capture the emotion so well. I love the pacing here...and your formating, especially with the last few words. That was so impactful...made such a statement. This poem is more than just a surface read, it reaches inside to that dark place where everyone hides guilt, and it opens the door and makes you face it yet again.

Yes guilt is a self inflicted result of the choices we choose, great reflection, love it well done🌹

Guilt is inevitable and nearly impossible to rid... You described this emotion so well through your eloquence. The structure of this poem matches the tone. Everything that you said is basically true. It's a feeling that can leave us hollow and destroying the self through the pain. While the answer may set us free, it reveals the darkest of our core, the place we never wished to exist.
