Kids These DaysA Poem by Madeleine CelesteYou could not possibly comprehend all of the backlash to National Walkout Day I saw this morning.
To all the kids these days,
The brave ones who walked out of their schools yesterday or today or are planning to tomorrow, The ones who stood in unity And the ones who stood in defiance To all the kids who are too young to vote But old enough to know what it takes to make a change, I'm sorry. I'm sorry we had to stand against gun violence in the first place. I'm sorry that nobody believes we're old enough, or wise enough, Or Republican enough to be heard by the federal government. People think we're "Democratic pawns"- Children that don't deserve their respect (Unless those children haven't been born yet. Huh. Fascinating.) And I'm sorry that we are being defined As people who don't have wills of their own And instead, people who are compliant solely to their elders People with no minds or thoughts or passion I'm really, truly sorry. But after the apologies I have a request, That is universal among those who are really, really trying To change our nation and make a permanent difference- My request is to never, ever listen to the people who will not support you. You may live under the same roof as them, Or in the same community or school or friend group or anywhere But the people who tell you to stay inside Sit down Be quiet Are just more people that you need to ignore Respectfully allow them to speak their mind, And then, just as respectfully, Shut them out and do what you need to do to make a change.
