The Gift of the Mask

The Gift of the Mask

A Poem by C.L. Wilson

It started with a gift.

It always does

This feeling that I get

Some where between thankfulness

And selfishness

The two clash with one another

Inside my soul

Struggling as it does in all of us

The struggle that truly defines

Who we truly we are

As I unwrap this gift

Beneath the Christmas tree

I’m desperately trying to decide

Which emotion I want to feel

As if it was a choice

I chose to be thankful

At least upon the mask
