Among the Number

Among the Number

A Poem by Glee
"

Among the Number

"

Heaven's gates are opening
The skys are falling
Brilliant lights are shining
The angels are singing
Halleluiah
The time has come

Prepare to storm the heavens
There is room for so many

Everyone must come
Black, White
Young, Old
Men, Women
Rich, Poor
Everyone must come

There is room for so many
But are you fit to be included
Are you strong enough to be
Among the number

Lord don't forget me
I want to be among the number
When the time comes

Include me among the number
For I am a good person

Count me among the number
Who'll march through heaven's gates
And be seated at your banquet

Just add me to one million
Count me in and you won't be sorry
For I am a good person

But why do you want to be among the number?
The number are just a statistic
A variable
That bears no meaning in a person's mind
The number are really just a number

How many people got into heaven?
A million
Ten million
A billion
A trillion
A zillion
A zillion zillion
Or better still uncountable
What difference does it make?

Who would notice you exist?
Who would care that you fell?
What if you got trampled on in the stampede?
The endless fight for the heavens

The number are just a statistic
A value
A random variable

Just hold on to that one person
You know for sure gives a dumb about you
And leave the number alone

Tragic accident
Hurricane Katrina
How many died?
One thousand
Two thousand

National disaster
September Eleven
How many died?
One thousand
Two thousand

Catastrophic calamity
World war two
How many people died?
Ten million
Twenty million

Nuclear Holocaust
Hiroshima and Nagasaki
How many died?
How many could have been born?
Ten million
Twenty million

What difference does it make?
They're just numbers
Values in people's heads
Nobody cares

But hey, be careful
There are actually people behind those numbers
There are actually souls beyond those statistics

People who breath
People who feel
People who love
People who care
And people who cry

Next time think about that
Before you subtract a one from a zillion

For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
