White Dog White Wolf

White Dog White Wolf

A Poem by redhors

White dog paws leave white wolf tracks

In the camel colored sand of my dirt road.

He will follow me anywhere,

Smiling

Tail high-

A proud badge of friendship

And solid loyalty.

He is a certified raccoon killer

Garbage getter

Counter surfer and

Couch jumper.

His amber eyes are always ready for adventures,

Nose sniffing the air to make sure the trail is safe

For his favorite person.

He never really died;

The flowers that surrounded him on the floor when she stuck the needle in his white coat

Weren’t picked by the hands of a grieving mother and father,

Or a heart broken sister.

The bleeding family who watched helplessly as he breathed his last breath

Wasn’t still piecing themselves back together from something else entirely different,

But very much the same.

I still feel him,

Both of them, actually.

Walking through the azaleas when they are in full bloom

My thoughts flood with memories,

My two favorite things in the world

But both hopelessly lost from my touch.

This is heart wrenchingly beautiful. I know the pain of losing an animal family member that brought so much happiness and many wonderful memories, and as sad as it is, you did an excellent portrayal of it in this piece. It gave me goosebumps as I read it. Amazing job!

I can't help feeling a layer on this. Sorry for your loss, for both of them.
