Alice in Love?

Alice in Love?

A Poem by Nick Reynolds

The tainted water near the riverbed
She walked alone looking for the burning red
Passion she’d heard of above the rabbit hole
From that crazy Mad Hatter who inevitably stole
Her heart from her chest and he never returned
Her love, her soul, and the feelings she learned
She remembered that time they drank tea at his house
She fell asleep and he had to gently rouse
Alice from her dreams of her old life
So alone and full of strife
Yet now she had the Mad Hatter
And his generous gifts of myrrh
A wonderful little kiss
And her state of pure bliss

Alice lifts her head to find herself alone
She needs to know what happened and flips through her phone
The calls, the texts all from her fantasy
She realizes they are gone, her mind goes hazy
Was it a dream, or a hallucination?
She thinks of the foundation
Of her love for him and the things they said
Of their plans for the future and to become wed
Then she starts to cry with the thought of loss
But she sees some movement by a rock topped with moss
She yells “come out” as her teeth loudly chatter
And there pops out the beautiful Mad Hatter

This was inspired by not only Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carrol) but also to the producers of the SyFy Original Movie Alice. And of course, whoever posted a contest challenging me to write this.
