River Raft

A Poem by Rick Chiantaretto
"
Written in 9th grade, but it still makes me laugh. Gotta love it :)
"

The water was not too cold that day

When the rafters went away.

They didn't heed the warnings put

But instead they pushed their foot

Into the rapid rolling waves-

The water was not too cold that day.

It started out to be real fun,

Going on that river run.

They bumped away, they sang a song

As they went, paddling along,

They really could control the waves-

The water was not too cold that day.

Then suddenly they lost control,

There echoed out screams of "No!"

For Tyler flipped out of the boat:

The rest struggled to stay afloat.

Under the water, Tyler hit his head

On a rock. . . and he was dead.

They went over a six foot fall

Managing to keep them all

Inside the sinking, fragile boat

It was getting harder to stay afloat;

Higher and higher got the waves-

The water was not too cold that day.

Then the boat hit a wall.

Flipping, tossing, out them all

Onto the shore, where now they stand

Thankful to be back on land,

Watching their boat go down the river,

Then they all began to shiver.

The water was not too cold that day-

But all their peace was swept away.

No one would find them here alone

Because the posted sign had told:

No one will go on this river run

You see the danger takes the fun.

They should have listened to the sign

Gone elsewhere, used their minds,

They could not climb or even jump

Because the cliffs went straight up.

If only they could learn to fly

But now they will most likely die.

So heed to warnings, posted and clear;

If you doubt, do not go near.

Just remember the River Raft

Before you brush it off and laugh.

And when you meet your fateful day,

Remember - "The water wasn’t cold that day!”
