The War Memorial

The War Memorial

A Poem by Laurie Morrison
"

The men who died and the men who return are our touchstone with the horror of war.

"

The Memorial

I don't visit as often

as I used to

I should

It's a long drive

My eyes can't

stand the strain

No one remembers

a faded dimestore flag

flutters from last Armistice day

He was a conscientious objector

He was, but not now

Never again

for anyone

Except that young soldier

in the foxhole

who watched his shattered body fly

Who's an old man, now

sipping his beer and barbecue

Enjoying the sun on Memorial Day

Nice job on a difficult subject. I see two poems here. The first is about visiting the memorial and the second is about the veteran and his journey. Good stuff. Eileen

This is so emotionally moving. Sentimental and a tribute poem.. beautiful, brought tears to my eyes, through the melancholic tone, beautifully written. xx

poignant and full of feeling. A subject dear to my heart outlining the futility of war I was particularly taken by the reference to the consciencious objector. It took a great deal of courage to be one
