Fruitless

Fruitless

A Poem by RiverRei

Loud.
Obnoxious.
Immature.
Cocky.

Him at first glance.
She misjudged him.
Taught never
to judge a book by it's cover.
Yet she never gave him a chance.

Conversations every day.
Obnoxious turns to
funny.
Immaturity part of his humor.

His cocky side is fake.
He's more sensitive
than he'll ever admit.
More caring than
he decides to let on.

He's so smart...
no one would have guessed.
Hidden within the immaturity,
an unparalleled intellect.

Romantic, too.
A poet like her.
A talent so fierce,
it sweeps her off her feet,
right into his arms.

A love like the fruit,
forbidden.
For she is already claimed,
though her heart is his.

He knows not how she feels.
He'll read her words,
but not know it's about him.
He won't see the longing in her eyes,
He sees only friendship...

Do you ever wonder how many missed connections we have in life?

I like this poem of yours a lot. Most of us are taught to not judge a book by its cover. Yet we are expected to out in the world. We don't learn each other's stories and miss out on the many ways our lives can be touched. Moved. Changed.

"Hidden in the immaturity, an unparalleled intellect." Often times that "immaturity" masks insecurity or anxiety and people are not given a fair chance.

This is one of those pieces I think should be shared in high school where so many people are targeted for being different or uninteresting. Not because they are, but because no one gives them a chance to shine.

Friendship and love. Hard line to walk if we want more or less.

'He won't see the longing in her eyes, he sees only friendship'- so true in some cases of affection. Great piece, I guess one day she'll just have to tell him RiverRei..

when we connect with someone how those feelings can be strong..a connection that could so easily be missed if we judge people from the outside never giving chance to let their inner beauty shine through!

This is almost like the story of Pride & Prejudice. Except with a different fate. A fate of not telling and not knowing how two souls truly feel about each other. A fate of always wondering of what could have been if friendship turned to something more.

Thanks for the review John :)
I think in the future - with smart watches and wearable tech, we wont be able to avoid 'knowing' when someone likes us more than just friends. Our vital signs will be broadcast - they will by then be scientifically recorded and identifiable as being in the state of love and the old ways - flirting and body language will be memories, just as sure a telepathy went the way of the dodo when speech came about. My watch will tell your watch that you and I are a match. A sure-fire compatible 'watch-match' - only our mind-brain may not agree.
There will always be unrequited love for whatever reason and always be fine poets as yourself to put into words how painful that can be. Superb writing RR.

River, I really like this style of poetry you seem to have settled into. Short, clipped lines can sometimes indicate that a poet does not know how to convey the feelings inside; in your pieces they are more like HINTS to get the ball rolling in the reader's mind, laying the groundwork for those feelings upon which to be expounded. The decision by you to write a poem/day in April has led you to new ways of expression, an expanse in your creative universe. Well done! take care...dan
