White Knight

White Knight

A Poem by Rose of Gondor

Black against white

A single piece

Standing on the chessboard

Alone in a crowd of foes

His head is delicately carved

The lively eyes

The flowing mane

A worthy knight in pure marble

He charges ahead

Protecting his king and his queen

Protecting the bishop and the rook

Protecting all that he held dear

Yet it was the little ones

He defended with his blood

Indeed, it was the little ones

The defenseless pawns

For pawns could be queens

He knew deep in his heart

And for the greater good of the war

He would gladly sacrifice

Every step he took

For his friends and goodness

Every minute he endured in darkness

For light and purity

Yet every breath, every hour was a torment

Until at last he set down his burden

And lay, broken and abandoned

At the side of the board

He had left the battlefield, finally

To his final destiny

His pawn had reached the end

And become queen

And a strange emotion welled up

Within the marble knight

His task was done

He could finally rest in peace

His companions were safe

His king unharmed

He had not a care in the world

Free he was in heart

He had made mistakes along the way

Errors he acknowledged

Perhaps it was meant to be so

He had no regrets

As he finally stood before his king

His heart was glad and proud

Pure he remained in spirit

And light he was of mind

For in his heart

The marble knight knew

He had been a white knight

After all

Great poem. Its about time someone wrote a poem about chess. I love chess. I don't have anyone to play with so I don't play a lot. Wonderful job.

:D
This was absolutely lovely. I always appreciate poems where inanimate objects are brought to life and given a purpose, and you surely exceeded my expectations. You are a great poet, and I can't wait to read more of your poems.

My favorite is your last stanza:
For in his heart
The marble knight knew
He had been a white knight
After all

Makes me in awe!!
