Drowning

Drowning

A Poem by rubie

Drowning

Flashbacks of images

Haunt my quiet moments

And the essence that was once us

Flows slowly from my mind’s eye

As the tears flow from my green ones

I once promised I’d catch you when you fall

But you are falling too fast now

And my arms cannot reach that far

So you will just have to stop falling

Until I can find your safety net

But then who will catch me?

Who will rush to my side?

As the essence that was once us

Morphs into one that does not fit me so well

And becomes a sea in which I cannot swim

I often have trouble coming up with good titles, but you sure nailed this one. The word, "drowning" is exactly what I thought after reading it. Whether drowning metaphorically or for real, we're often obliged to risk it all to save someone close. Hold on, or save yourself--that is the question.

Love is an action but when only one is acting to save it they both drown in a sea of despair. Very true and beautifully expressed, dear poet

There is a time in every life that this poem applies itself to, at least it is so for me.

Your closing line took my breath away, and had me wishing I could have been one of your students! I bet your philosophical intuition made you one extraordinary teacher!

So, you've got "green eyes". . . Good to know. I kinda love green eyes. Seemed, the whole nature & the shimmery castles -- the shine of granite -- have been residing in such green-ish world. Anyway, very deep poetry you've pen'd up. Seemed, the realism of love has emerged into the cascades of your "Drowning" words, nicely. I believe, love's itself an ocean where whether you swim or go sunk deep inside its layers, waters -- the ocean -- just takes you either ahead or deep down into the fathom of its voids/depths, for no reason. Very creative & philosophical write you've come up with. Seemed, you played with some kinda analogies of your "real" love-life & well captured those moments in words, creatively. Nice imagery.

darn those haunting thoughts that leave us trying the breach the surface of our sanity...sometimes all we can do is let it go and save what's left of our hearts...as Jacob said, this is heavy but so well written

i couldn't agree more, my friend...you're welcome, as always :)
damn this is heavy---and really powerful in its wording....yes, if we exert so much of ourselves to catch another, who will catch us?
