Childhood

Childhood

A Poem by Sabyth Fay

Soft pretzels and cheese
Shoe laces untied and on the floor
Once upon a time our dreams
Were greater than they even seemed
How close we'd come
With Pokémon cards in hand
To being something like a comic book character
Arms tight around a teddy bear
As if our hearts would actually stop beating without it
Well wouldn't it be great
If Hot Pockets were as healthy for you as they tasted
If the monster under the bed was softer than the bed
If all we had to do was pretend
And we would never grow up
Never grow old
Never learn the rules
Oh, how nice it would be, no?
To forget adults for a while
While we flew and breathed fire around our chair-and-blanket castles
And swam with cheesy goldfish crackers in a sea of clouds
Any words bigger than ten letters is just too much
I eat words like that… or at least any word in my A L P H A B E T soup
You can't take these dreams away from me
I'm the king of an army of plastic men
Even in our dreams the world is perfect
I guess we never learned our lesson
We never looked hard enough past our imaginary illusions
Oh, the world is a little too small for that
Too small to hold all our dreams
Too small to pretend anymore
It's only big enough to make us grow up
To make us see
Past all these dreams…
