A Poem by Jacob Malone
"

Threw this together.

"

The air is thick, polluted and rotted by the spectators around me

Pushing and shoving for some room against my back and sides

I was at the front, leaning on the rail, staring up at the stage.

Electricity must have jolted my unwelcome comrades for they pushed forward in anticipation.

Screams and hollering echoed in the room as the lights went dark and the figures came into view.

1,2,3,4

the drums begin to roll

as the lights come up in a sudden

flash!

the guitarists get their fingers in place

and began ripping across the crowd,

with the help of large speakers.

i am swallowed by the mass,

the energy surging like a plague,

i find myself jumping, screaming

singing along with the band.

my body isn't my own.

i lose all sense as i begin

to headbang to raw unfiltered music,

throwing my hands up in triumph and defiance

of a power greater than me,

what power? any power!

screw it! we don't care

if its a virus let us be infected!

if its a monster let us be eaten!

if its our enemy, let us keep him close!

no one knows what they're saying anymore,

it isn't our problem what anyone thinks

crash! rings the symbols

i continue to scream but i push back through the crowd,

to escape? never!

i enter a musical hall of hell

a mosh.

men and women throwing themselves about

into one another

without any care of injury

just because guitars and drums were playing.

but not just any men and women but me as well,

i had become part of the hell

entering without my own consent.

i am slammed into, thrown down,

but i fight back, knocking them down,

thrashing about like a hurricane,

and showing them who is king.

My reign was short lived as someone knocks me out of the mosh just as the music stops.

I was sweating, covered in beer and pop that had been thrown into the pit,

My body was still shaking with the feral energy that hadn't escaped me yet.

Everyone had calmed down until the band yelled at us and started again.

the chaos started again

but i wanted to be more, above it all.

i grabbed someone and in my insanity

i convinced him to throw me up.

by four guys i was tossed

onto the throbbing crowd

that took me and threw me forward as I screamed

hell yeah!

fires of pride ran through me

as i was tossed again.

finally i was at the end and security grabbed me

and helped me from the raging mob

that had risen me to the top.

I yelled out "Rock and Roll" as I stumbled away from the front, laughing as the plague began to leave me.

I had escaped from Hell, been handed to Heaven, and then brought back down to Earth.

I had been infected by a virus, champion in a mosh, and a flyer with no wings.

I had lived in suspense, been killed by a tsunami of sound, and had been resurrected by a mob.

Would I be willing to trade in this experience?

Not even for the world, the universe, or even the whole cosmos.
