You are thirteen years old

Your world is burning, falling down around you

Enclosing you in a shroud of despair

Unlike any you have experienced thus far

Tears of real pain roll down your cheeks

She called you ugly and fat and weird, and it hurt

More than broken bones and skinned knees

The girl’s words sliced right through you,

Reaching more deeply than you ever thought they could

Imprinting those hurtful words on your heart

forever

You are thirteen years old

You are fifteen years old

You know how smart you are, almost

But still have not grasped how important that is

How intelligence prevails where beauty does not

How the good men will like your brains, not your bones

So you stare at yourself in the mirror and

With tears in your eyes you lean over the toilet seat

And stick your fingers down your throat

Because the desire to be thin and beautiful

Makes you forget how smart you are

For just a moment

You are fifteen years old

You are seventeen years old

You do not yet fully understand the workings of boys

Of these almost men who do not love you

You do not understand that when they ask you

To come over and watch a movie

That they want to do more than kiss you

And that if you say no, they will not be kind

You do not understand that you’re not a freak

Simply because you succeed in school

And prioritize your life accordingly, already

Putting work before fun, because

You are different, but you do not yet realize

Being different is the best thing that ever happened to you

But you will

You are seventeen years old

You are nineteen years old

High school is over, those people just weak memories

With more freedom and choices than you ever imagined

With all the time in the world and all the love in your heart

The story of your life is no longer one of an outsider

The people you have now, you know, will be there for life

You work so hard, and more success has come to you

In this past year than in your entire life up to this point

You can do anything, go anywhere, talk to anyone

Your options are limitless, and you finally see that

You have come into your own, beautifully

And this is just the beginning

You are nineteen years old

And you know it will only go up from here.

Beautiful! Really good to say to the people, that you aren't just useless, that you can do something! A very good poem though I can connect to the 13 year part more cause I am a 13 and those things happen to me. Lol.
