Anomie

Anomie

A Poem by Sami Khalil

A sociological write on Anomie...

Anomie

         (Sami)              by          (Khalil)

Midst the wound and the dream

Are points of no return

A nation of others in world shifts

Nestled between the roads to riches and checklists.

Midst the masters and peasantry

Are illusions of the damned

In times of gathering sour grapes

Crossed between glorified mules and bleating sheep.

Midst idyllic truths and raconteurs

Are spaces of wizened fools

Ghost lines of exploitation and self regrets

Racing the wildfires of self-interest.

Midst yourselves

Where I pity you and not your labors

Are virtual prisons of deviance

Owning Anomie at the last frontiers.

This is a nice analogy to the refugee crisis.

"In times of gathering sour grapes"- I quite enjoyed this line; I'm reminded of the sense of wandering and loss in "Grapes of Wrath." Aptly penned! Anomie invokes a sense of the ghostly, the not quite real, not quite here nor there, just wisps of a bygone era.

It is strange what we aspire to at times.
Affluence is not the epitome of humanity. No spiritual practice has affluence as the goal or endgame. Maybe a childish venue of "heaven" etc... considers affluence, but true wealth is the wealth of living to our fullest.
I like the picture Sami. Poetry is on par with my high expectation of your work. Great job!

"Racing the wildfires of self interest" is one of the strongest lines of modern poetry I have ever read. And that leads into the final stanza that words that need to be read and reread and read again in order to fully appreciate how powerful and wickedly true the are.
But this is nit the philosophy of one jaded and sardonic, the poem is source in a love for generosity and compassion.

Is it the disconnect of the affluent? and the banality of the bourgeois middle-ground?

not angst but anomie?

A very thought-provoking poem!

I like the image you created, somehow gloomy but as well realistic.
The last line is striking. (as it should be in my opinion)

I must say, this might be one of my favourite pieces of poetry that I have read on this site by far! I love the way you use the words. It creates an image of not all is as it seems in the end - to me at least - like the good and bad to a curtain situation.
This is really brilliant.

Well done!
